Getting To Broomshaw

Ample on-site parking is available, though you can take advantage of our location to leave your transport behind and lessen your carbon footprint. Immediate, easy access to the Haltwhistle Gorge footpath allows you to take the short walk that will lead you directly onto the Military Road and the heart of Roman Wall country. Equally easily you can walk into Haltwhistle itself with its access to the coast to coast rail and A69 bus services as well as a variety of shops and eating places.

Or you can conserve your energy with the assistance of the AD122 Roman Wall bus service which not only links the forts but also provides a walker and cycle friendly service for easy access to both east and western extremities of the wall.

Directions Using Public Transport


Public Transport
Trains operate hourly east and west from Haltwhistle Station to stations between Newcastle and Carlisle. Broomshaw is just over a mile from the train station. Buses. Bus number 685 runs hourly from Newcastle to Carlisle, leaving from the Market Square (a mile from Broomshaw). Also the seasonal Hadrian's Wall Bus, AD122, stops at intervals, both at the Market Square and railway station and can also be accessed from Broomshaw at The Milecastle Inn, a short walk up the Haltwhistle Burn.

From Haltwhistle on foot/cycle.
Leaving the railway station cross West Road walking towards the Railway Hotel. Turn right onto West Gate and pass the War Memorial Hospital on your left. Opposite Off license/Save the Children shop turn left into Aesica Rd. Turn right its junction with Fair Hill then left into Willia Rd which is clearly signposted with a brown sign to the Burn Gorge and Roman Wall. Follow Willia Rd. past The Old Brickworks, to its conclusion. Broomshaw is on your left.

From the Market Square, pass through the arch following directions to Sainsburys. Leave the supermarket car park by the main entrance and turn left onto Fair Hill. After a short distance, turn right into Willia Rd which is clearly signposted with a brown sign to the Burn Gorge and Roman Wall. Follow Willia Rd. past The Old Brickworks, to its conclusion. Broomshaw is on your left.

From the Roman Wall National Trail and cycle path.
From the Milecastle Inn and Shield Hill junction walk west 50 metres until you reach, on your left, a footpath sign to Haltwhistle and the Burn Gorge. Once you have joined the excellent footpath follow the trail to a bridge and picnic site. Broomshaw is on your right.
